Opened in 1991, the UNESCO Office Rabat is a cluster office representing the Organization in Algeria, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. Education is also a major field of cooperation between the country and UNESCO. Since Libya’s independence, this cooperation has permitted illiteracy to be reduced from 90% to 30% and to reinforce policies on information and communication. A UNESCO Chair in Water in Desert and Arid Zones was established in 2001 at Al-Fateh University
