Clinton arrives in Malta to discuss Libya

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Malta early today for talks with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi on the circumstances in Libya.

She was welcomed at the airport by Maltese Foreign Minister Tonio Borg.

Clinton is due to meet Gonzi later today  in the capital Valletta.

Malta has been involved in the Libyan crisis by serving as a logistics point for the evacuation of workers and the provision of humanitarian aid. It has also had a role in air traffic control over Libya.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague visited Malta on Sunday and yesterday before flying on to Libya.

Clinton is the most senior U.S. administration official to visit the Mediterranean island since President George Bush (senior) and Secretary of State James Baker were here for the superpower meeting with thence Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in 1989
